Thoughts on MS Office

I've recently switched back to Microsoft Office from OpenOffice.Org. At least for a little while while I'm looking for a job. I gave up on Office somewhere during my final semester at university in 2006 because Office 2003 was too buggy and kept corrupting and losing my research. I was ready to go postal.

Anti-Industrial Design

There's a discussion at BusinessWeek.com over a post regarding Eastern vs. Western designers. The idea is that we, the West, are asking Asian societies, predominantly China and India, to curb their rapid consumerist growth and grow as post-consumer societies instead. Who are we, the West, to expect they should do this?

Something in the comments caught my eye. I've never heard anyone speak ill of ID. Criticisms and concerns, sure, and usually constructive and mindful of new directions and changes. But never have I heard someone speak so vehemently against it.

The world has changed and [ID] simply cannot be redefined, it is slowly expiring and becoming redundant because it has next to zero intellectual base, history and standards, and thus no respect or recognition.

I'll go into further depth about the main idea of the article in another post.

What do you think of this? Have you ever heard such harsh criticisms of ID before? Do you feel this way yourself? Tell us about it.

I've narrowed down my blogging options further still.

  1. Posting: I'm using the built in Joomla! article functionality with all blog posts under a section called Blog.  Then I have categories within that section: Life, Design, Inspiration.  I'm still tweaking that structure, but it seems to cover most of my posts for now.

  2. Commenting: I'm using a component called !JoomlaComment.  It's maybe not the best option, but of the two or three I've tried so far I like it the best.

  3. Tagging: I'm using a component/module/plugin combination called JoomlaTag.  I don't seem to be able to tag while posting from the front end, but maybe I can while posting from the admin side of things (yup).  But it has mass tagging capabilities, which would be great if I'd found it after more than twenty or so posts.  More on this after running it through its paces.

When I lost my job in November 2008, I decided to redo my website and get serious about my web presence.  I started out using Wordpress as my CMS.  Wordpress, as the matrix already knows, is a very powerful, easy to use blogging platform.  Plus, with no small amount of effort in configuration/hacking, it's also a decent small-scale CMS.

But that functionality comes at a price: Speed.   I wanted more CMS functionality out of the box since my site is primarily a portfolio site, and then a blog.  Enter Joomla!
